West Orange

Stretched over a rolling landscape, West Orange is located only 18 miles west of New York City and borders Caldwell, Verona, Bloomfield, Livingston, Maplewood and Orange. Although mainly residential, this 12.1 square-mile town includes flourishing commercial areas in the downtown section of the town. Approximately 43,000 people reside in West Orange who enjoy its magnificent cultural scene and close proximity to New York City. West Orange is divided into several neighborhoods, all of which have their own style: Gregory, Hazel, Mount Pleasant, Pleasantdale, Redwood, St. Cloud, Washington and the gated community of Llewellyn Park.

Transportation

West Orange residents have a number of commuting options. A free jitney – which runs during the morning and evening rush hour – is offered in the Gregory and St. Cloud neighborhoods to and from the Orange or South Orange train stations on NJ Transit’s Midtown Direct line. A spacious park & ride is also offered alongside the Codey Arena where Community Coach, Inc. frequently transports commuters on a 50-minute bus ride to Port Authority Bus Terminal. Those who wish to travel to Port Authority on NJ Transit bus lines may do so as well by being picked up at one of their many stops. West Orange also operates convenient mini-buses for seniors who wish to get around town.

Schools

West Orange recently contributed millions of dollars to revamp its schools’ facilities to accommodate its growing student body. For example, a new middle school was added several years ago to eliminate overcrowding and, in 2005, a new gymnasium, cafeteria, science and technology labs, art rooms and academic classrooms were built at the high school.

There are seven elementary schools in West Orange, three middle schools and one high school. They are as follows:

    • Elementary Schools (grades K-5): Gregory Elementary School, Hazel Avenue Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Pleasantdale Elementary School, Redwood Elementary School, St. Cloud Elementary School, Washington Elementary School
    • Middle Schools (grades 6-8): Thomas A. Edison Central Sixth Middle School (grade 6), Liberty Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School
    • High School (grades 9-12): West Orange High School
